Prima Zanetti expands its machinery with a new automatic optical inspection system

Quality inspection automation is now one of the most effective tools for ensuring component conformity. Prima Zanetti's latest addition to its machine shop reflects this commitment: a vision system designed for dimensional inspection and automatic sorting of metal components.

High-precision optical inspection for component sorting

The new system has been developed to perform automatic in-line dimensional checks using a high-resolution industrial camera and dedicated software that allows the inspection parameters to be configured quickly and easily. Operators can define measurement points directly on the image of a sample part through an intuitive touch-screen interface.

A fully automated process

Components are fed by a 400 mm diameter vibratory bowl feeder and transferred onto a conveyor belt that ensures proper orientation as they pass through the inspection area. A vertically installed camera captures an image of each part and performs the required measurements, comparing them with the predefined parameters.

Based on the inspection results:

  • compliant parts are automatically separated and directed to the designated collection container;
  • out-of-tolerance parts are diverted to a dedicated container;
  • any unrecognized or incorrectly positioned components are returned to the feeding system for reprocessing, preventing sorting errors.

The entire process is managed through an industrial monitor, allowing all operating parameters to be configured with ease.

High-accuracy vision system

The core of the system is a 5-megapixel industrial camera equipped with a standard lens and designed to capture an inspection area of approximately 20 × 15 mm. The system delivers an accuracy of ±0.01 mm per pixel, enabling reliable dimensional inspection and the detection of foreign particles or geometric defects even on very small components. These features allow the integration of optical inspection directly into the manufacturing process, ensuring consistent, repeatable results while significantly reducing the need for manual inspection.

With this latest implementation, Prima Zanetti continues its path toward technological innovation by adopting solutions that support the digitalization of manufacturing processes.
