Bunching, stranding, braiding, sheathing, armouring: the basics and the latest

Some time has passed since the last article of our column “The basics and the latest”, which takes in consideration on one hand the basic knowledge concerning different manufacturing processes and on the other hand the latest sources of information: shows to attend, newly published market surveys etc.
The topic we have chosen this time is bunching, stranding, braiding and other manufacturing and processing technologies needed to obtain strands and electrical cables.
The information has been compiled with the help of Dipl.-Ing. Konrad Dengler.
• The basics: structure of an electrical cable
Electrical cables are assemblies of one or more conductors (generally drawn wires twisted together), and one or more insulation materials. The first step towards the manufacture of electrical cables is called “bunching”.
Bunching is the process of creating bunches, that is uniform and stable wire assemblies. A machine will simultaneously twist the individual wires around a longitudinal axis in order to create larger assemblies that are more flexible than a single wire of a similar size.

• Market
According to Technavio, the Global Cable Assembly Market is likely to increase by 6.69% in 2020 compared to 2019 despite the coronavirus outbreak. The IT sector will have a mixed effect on this market. The Covid-19 impact will normalize by the third quarter of 2021 and the first one of 2022, in the worst case.
